The gray dog’s journey to the Cedarcroft home of Tom and Sarah Pedroni began in April 2014, when he was found limping along the side of a road in Charles County.

“The person who found him said he was emaciated,” Sarah Pedroni says. “He had a terrible wound that went completely around his right back leg. There was no fur and no skin. It was just raw.”

The sweet-natured Schnoodle-mix puppy later ended up at the SPCA/ Humane Society of Prince George’s County, where vets judged him to be no more than five or six months old.

One vet thought the dog would have to be euthanized. Another vet proposed just removing his injured leg. In the end, the doctors decided to treat the wound to see if it would heal on its own.

After the pup recovered, he was put up for adoption. Two years ago, the Pedronis spotted Achilles’ photo on a pet rescue website. When they met him at an adoption event in Annapolis, that sealed the deal.

“We kind of fell in love with him right then and there,” Sarah Pedroni says. “He
