Robert T. Laur, Westinghouse employee
Robert T. Laur, a retired Westinghouse Electric Corp. financial manager and World War II veteran, died of respiratory failure Wednesday at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Westminster. The Sykesville resident was 89. The son of Charles A. Laur Sr., a Montgomery Ward purchasing agent, and Katherine Stubbs Laur, Robert Thomas Laur was born in Baltimore and raised in the Academy Heights neighborhood of Catonsville.
He was a 1945 graduate of Catonsville High School. He then enlisted in the Army and served during the war with the occupation forces in Italy.
After his discharge, Mr. Laur attended Gettysburg College on the GI Bill and earned his bachelor’s degree. He began his career at Westinghouse in 1951. At the time of his retirement in 1986, he was working in the company’s Oceanic Division in Annapolis as a senior financial manager.
The former longtime Catonsville resident had been a member and treasurer for 37 years of Bishop Cummins Memorial Reformed Episcopal Church in Catonsville.
Mr. Laur and his wife of 68 years, the former Mary Evelyn Anderson, lived in Shelbyville, Del., for 13 years before moving to Sykesville about a decade ago.
He enjoyed preparing income taxes for family and friends and was a tenpin bowler.
He was also an avid fan of the old Baltimore Colts, as well as the Ravens and Orioles.
Mr. Laur was a member of St. Stephen’s Reformed Episcopal Church, 2275 Liberty Road in Eldersburg, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Laur is survived by three sons, Robert T. Laur Jr. and William A. Laur, both of Ellicott City, and Michael D. Laur of Westminster; a daughter, Lillian Suzanne Groat of Brooklyn; and 10 grandchildren.
