Jump Sucker Stable’s Blacktype ran his winning streak to three races with a record-setting performance, settling early and finding room along the inside down the stretch to capture the $200,000 Commonwealth Turf Cup (Grade 2) on Saturday at Laurel Park. The 1-mile Turf Cup for 3-year-olds and up was the fourth of eight stakes worth $850,000 in purse money and second of three graded stakes on the 11-race Commonwealth Day program. Given an ideal trip by jockey Trevor McCarthy for New York-based trainer Christophe Clement, Blacktype ($9.40) hit the wire in 1 minute, 33.43 seconds over a firm All Along Turf Course, breaking the mark of 1:34.23 set by 4-year-old Cozy Gain in April 2006.

In other graded stakes races, Deeply Undervalued boosted his stock in the 3-year-old turf division by rallying with a strong stretch run to capture the $200,000 Commonwealth Derby (G2) and My Impression found her footing over a firm turf course, surging to a 31⁄4-length victory in the $150,000 Commonwealth Oaks (G3).

Winners in the $60,000 stakes were Rose Brier (Bert Allen Stakes), Moon River (Punch Line), Skipalute (Brookmeade), Lime House Louie (Jamestown) and Rapid Rhythm (Oakley). 3-0 (25-13, 25-14,, 25-12) at No. 2 Minnesota (9-1) in the Big Ten opener for both teams Friday night. Former Maryland basketball star Dez Wells has signed with Doxa Lefkadas B.C., which began play in 1982 and will be playing for the first time in the top division of the Greek Basket League. Wells, who went undrafted after being an All-Big Ten first-team selection as a senior in 2014-15, played last season with the Oklahoma City Blue, an NBA Development League affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder. After playing on the Chicago Bulls’ summer league team this year, Wells had an offer from a team in Germany but failed a physical because of hamstring problems. LOCAL GOLF: Hunt Valley Golf Club, featuring a hole-in-one by Gavin Springer, defeated Congressional Country Club, 8-4, for the Senior Team championship of the Maryland State Golf Association. MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: Patrick Mullins (Maryland) scored two goals and D.C. United (8-9-13) earned a 4-1 win over visiting Orlando City (7-10-13) to move into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: The visiting Washington Spirit (12-5-3) got a goal early in the second half from Crystal Dunn but lost, 3-1, at the Chicago Red Stars (9-5-6). The Spirit still would finish the league’s best regularseason record if the Portland Thorns (11-3-5) lose at Sky Blue FC (7-7-5) tonight. —
