Manager John Farrell said 3B Pablo Sandoval is progressing faster than expected from shoulder surgery and didn’t rule out his return to the team this season if needed. Sandoval had surgery in May to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. ■ Rangers: SS Elvis Andrus, the lone veteran in the lineup a day after the Rangers clinched the American League West title, hit a pair of two-run homers in a 5-0 victory over the Athletics. RHP Yu Darvish struck out nine and allowed just two hits over seven innings. ■ Blue Jays: OF Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer off reliever Tyler Clippard in the eighth inning to lift the AL wild-card- leading Blue Jays to a 3-0 win over the Yankees, who were shut out for the third game in a row. The scoreless streak is the Yankees’ longest since 1975. ■ Orioles: DH Trey Mancini hit his third homer in nine majorleague at-bats, OF Mark Trumbo connected for his league-leading 45th homer and the Orioles beat the Diamondbacks 6-1 to pull a half-game ahead of the Tigers for the AL’s second wild card. ■ Phillies: 3B Maikel Franco and OF Darin Ruf each hit long a home run for the second consecutive night as the Phillies built a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning and then hung on for a 10-8 win over the Mets, whose NL wildcard lead was cut to a half-game. 1-ran for Trumbo in the 7th.
