Friendly wager ends in a match

DATE: June 26 HER STORY: Quinhon N. Goodlowe, 40, was born and raised in Pittsburgh. She moved to Baltimore to attend Morgan State University in 2005. Quinhon is a principal in the Baltimore public school system. Her mother, Darcel Goodlowe, lives in Pittsburgh.

HIS STORY: Robert Scott, 45, was born in Baltimore. He is a Baltimore public school teacher. His parents, the Rev. Mark and Sharon Groover, live in Baltimore.

THEIR STORY: Robert and Quinhon met in fall 2014 while both were working at the Academy for College and Career Exploratio­n.

The two made a friendly bet on a game between the Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers; the winner would buy the loser “cocoa.”

The Steelers lost, so Quinhon honored the bet by bringing Robert a new mug and several packages of hot-chocolate mix. But Robert told Quinhon that the loser was supposed to purchase food at a nearby restaurant called Koco’s Pub. The two bet again the second time the teams played that season, and Quinhon won, leading Robert to take her to Koco’s Pub. During dinner, the two spoke for hours. “The evening was amazing,” Quinhon recalled.

The relationsh­ip soon blossomed after that.

THE PROPOSAL: Robert proposed to Quinhon on July 26, 2015, during her family’s reunion.

In front of more than 100 of her relatives, Robert got down on one knee and asked Quinhon to marry him. On Oct. 17, 2015, the two had an engagement party with more than 200 family and friends.

VENUE: About 250 guests attended the ceremony and reception, which were held at the Sheraton Baltimore North Hotel in Towson.

FLOWERS AND DECOR: The wedding had a black-and-white color scheme. Bella Fiori Couture Floral and Events Design designed the floral arrangemen­ts and reception decor. Atlantic Stage Lighting provided the lighting.

HER DRESS: Quinhon wore an Allure gown that featured a sweetheart neckline with Swarovski straps and a dropped-waist bodice adorned with embroidery and Swarovski

crystals. The dress, which she bought at Curvaceous Couture Bridal Collection, also featured an 8-foot-long train. Quinhon completed the look with an 8-foot-long Cathedral wedding veil adorned with Swarovski crystals.

BRIDESMAID­S’ DRESSES: Bridesmaid­s wore Vera Wang black one-shoulder, floorlengt­h dresses from David’s Bridal.

MEN’S ATTIRE: Robert wore a white tuxedo jacket with black accent lapel from Tuxedo House. The groomsmen wore black Vera Wang tuxedos from Men’s Wearhouse.

FOOD AND DESSERT: The Sheraton catered the reception. Displayed hors d’oeuvres included Maryland crab dip with toasted baguettes and pita chips and fresh fruit. Passed hors d’oeuvres included maple pecan chicken tenders, tenderloin wrapped in bacon, shrimp tempura and shrimp spring rolls.

Dinner consisted of a baby spinach salad with goat cheese, candied walnuts and grape tomatoes; grilled chicken breast topped with a citrus glaze and Caribbean mahi-mahi with a mango salsa; asparagus and risotto; grilled shrimp and filet mignon topped with red wine demi-glace, served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli; and lobster ravioli served with garlic bread and a lobster claw garnish.

La Cakerie made a six-tier vanilla cake with fresh strawberri­es, cream cheese and sugar frosting. The cake was topped with fresh red roses.

MUSIC: Music was provided by harpist Cheryl Roeske; the Panama Band and DJ Exclusive.

FAVORS: Each guest received a black monogramme­d bag that included a deck of playing cards adorned with the bride and groom’s picture, personaliz­ed casino chips, and a CD of the couple’s favorite music.

SPECIAL TOUCHES: The couple honeymoone­d in Honolulu.
