Speedier boarding, but bringing less, at Spirit

- By Ellen Creager

That personal item you bring free aboard Spirit Airlines flights soon will have to shrink in size. But the airline also is working on two positive developments: a mobile app and TSA PreCheck.

Starting April 1, the personal item that must fit underneath your seat, like a purse or backpack, can be no larger than 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches, including handle and wheels. That’s about the size of a small briefcase.

The size allowed now is a more squarish 16 inches by 14 inches by 12 inches.

Spirit charges for carryon bags and checked luggage but allows one personal item at no cost.

Spirit also will join the TSA PreCheck program in November so its customers with Transportation Security Administration clearance can use fast security lines at the airports, a Spirit spokesman said..

Lastly, Spirit is working on a mobile upgrade. Spirit is still stuck in the technological Stone Age because passengers must print out a paper boarding pass, and there is no Spirit app for mobile phones.
