With a Breeders’ Cup berth at stake, Sagamore Racing, Allen Rosenblum and The Club Racing LLC’s Miss Temple City became the first filly in 22 years to win the $1 million Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. In her previous time out, Miss Temple City became the first filly to win the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes. Trained by Fair Hill-based Graham Motion and ridden by jockey Edgar Prado, the 4-year-old filly by Temple City, out of Glittering Tax by Artax, was the 6-1 choice competing Saturday against 10 male rivals, including Motion’s Ring Weekend. Miss Temple City jumped out of the No. 7 post, staying outside, where she kept pace just behind Pleuven. Heading into the final furlong, Prado guided Miss Temple City into the lead, where she fought off a late push from the favorite, Ironicus, to finish in a time of 1 minute, 37 seconds on the firm turf to improve her career record to 14-5-3-2. “We’ve believed for a long time that she is an elite horse and she proved it again today. This is a true team effort,” said Hunter Rankin, president of Sagamore Racing. Said Motion of Miss Temple City, “She’s the best filly I’ve ever trained. She’s spectacular.” LAUREL PARK: Matthew Schera’s John Jones led every step of the way to extend his winning streak to three races with a 3-length triumph in the featured ninth race. In a race rained off the Kelso Turf Course to a good main track and scratched down to a field of three, John Jones ($3) ran a mile in 1:37.42 as a 1-2 betting favorite in the $47,000 third-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up.
