Va. Tech routs UNC; Oklahoma edges Texas; Irish fall to N.C. State
Trevor Knight had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 8 Texas A&M withstood another late rally by Tennessee to beat the No. 9 Volunteers, 45-38, on Saturday.
After Knight ran in for the touchdown, Armani Watts intercepted Joshua Dobbs’ pass on the next play, visiting Tennessee’s seventh turnover, to end the game.
The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime.
Knight threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 110 yards and three scores.
The Volunteers (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) had rallied from doubledigit deficits to win four of their past five games, including last week’s lastplay victory over Georgia. They trailed by 21 points in the third quarter Saturday before tying the score on Alvin Kamara’s 18-yard touchdown reception with 41 seconds left.
Texas A&M (6-0, 4-0) had a chance to win in regulation, but Daniel LaCamera’s 38-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide left.
NO. 1 ALABAMA 49, NO. 16 ARKANSAS 30: Jalen Hurts accounted for four touchdowns and Minkah Fitzpatrick had three interceptions as the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) extended its nation-best winning streak to 18 games with a victory over the Razorbacks (4-2, 0-2).
Damien Harris added 122 rushing yards on 13 carries for Alabama, which finished with 517 total yards.
NO. 2 OHIO STATE 38, INDIANA 17: J.T. Barrett ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and passed for another score to lead the host Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten Conference) over the Hoosiers.
Ohio State relied mostly on its ground game, which accounted for 290 yards, and some tough play by its defense — including a critical fourthquarter stop on its 4-yard line after an interception by Barrett — to fend off the Hoosiers, who upset Michigan State last weekend.
NO. 25 VIRGINIA TECH 34, NO. 17 NORTH CAROLINA 3: Jerod Evans threw for two scores and ran for an additional score to help the visiting Hokies (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Tar Heels (4-2, 2-1) in heavy rain and wind from Hurricane Matthew.
Sam Rogers and Chris Cunningham had touchdown catches and Virginia Tech dominated reigning Coastal Division champion North Carolina in a surprising romp.
The Hokies had their share of troubles, including seven fumbles and several bobbled snaps as they gained a season-low 264 yards.
North Carolina finished with 131 yards, with Mitch Trubisky throwing his first two interceptions of the year, while the Hokies scored 20 points off four turnovers.
The Tar Heels, playing without injured running back Elijah Hood, failed to score a touchdown for the first time under fifth-year coach Larry Fedora.
NO. 20 OKLAHOMA 45, TEXAS 40: Dede Westbrook had three touchdown catches longer than 40 yards while setting a Sooners single-game record with 232 receiving yards, and Oklahoma (3-2, 2-0 Big 12 Conference) held on for a victory over the Longhorns (2-3, 0-2) in the Red River rivalry in Dallas.
Samaje Perine added 214 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries for the Sooners, who had 672 total yards against Texas coach Charlie Strong’s beleaguered defense.
The Longhorns led after two long touchdown passes by freshman quarterback Shane Buechele in the first 41⁄2 minutes of the second half. But Oklahoma went ahead for good on Baker Mayfield’s 4-yard touchdown run, which made it 28-27.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 21, NO. 21 COLORADO 17: Tyler Petite caught his second touchdown pass from Sam Darnold with 8:28 to play, and the host Trojans (3-3, 2-2 Pacific-12 Conference) overcame four turnovers to beat the Buffaloes (4-2, 2-1).
Daniel Imatorbhebhe also caught a touchdown pass from Darnold, who passed for 358 yards and three scores along with two fumbles and an interception.
BRIGHAM YOUNG 31, MICHIGAN STATE 14: Jamaal Williams ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and the visiting Cougars (3-3) beat the Spartans (2-3).
Taysom Hill ran for a touchdown and threw for another in the second half, and the Cougars largely shut down the Spartans after Michigan State scored a touchdown on its first drive. BYU trailed 7-3 at halftime but scored touchdowns on its first four secondhalf possessions before taking a knee on its final drive.
IOWA 14, MINNESOTA 7: Akrum Wadley ran for a 54-yard touchdown with 5:28 left and the visiting Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) hung on to beat the Golden Gophers (3-2, 0-2) to claim the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the second straight year.
Wadley had 14 carries for 107 yards for Iowa, which matched the program record with its eighth straight road win, despite two interceptions thrown by C.J. Beathard.
PURDUE 34, ILLINOIS 31, OT: Freshman kicker J.D. Dellinger hit a 28-yard field goal in overtime to lead the visiting Boilermakers (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) to a win over the Fighting Illini (1-4, 0-2).
Illinois took the ball first in overtime but sophomore quarterback Chayce Crouch fumbled and Purdue safety Leroy Clark recovered.
Illinois kicker Chase McLaughlin had a chance to win the game on the final play of regulation but his 41-yard field-goal attempt hit off the right upright.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE 10, NOTRE DAME 3: Dexter Wright returned a blocked punt 16 yards for a touchdown with 12:43 remaining, and the host Wolfpack (4-1) topped the Fighting Irish (2-4) in a game played in hurricane conditions.
A waterlogged field saturated by Hurricane Matthew’s heavy rains and wind-whipped by its gusts rendered both offenses ineffective, so N.C. State beat Notre Dame with special teams and defense.
PITTSBURGH 37, GEORGIA TECH 34: Chris Blewitt hit a 31-yard field goal on the final play as the host Panthers (4-2, 1-1 ACC) rallied past the Yellow Jackets (3-3, 1-3).
Trailing by a touchdown, Pitt tied the score with 3:50 to go when tight end Scott Orndoff caught a tipped pass and outran the defense for a 74-yard touchdown. Georgia Tech went for it on fourth down at its 34 with 2:25 remaining but Dedrick Mills was stopped for no gain.
