Big Green blocks Tigers’ way, 20-17

Dartmouth swats away two late field-goal attempts; Hampton tops Morgan St.

Charlie Miller and Jeremiah Douchee blocked two field-goal attempts in the final three minutes and host Dartmouth held on for a 20-17 football win over Towson on Saturday.

The Tigers marched 94 yards in 15 plays, but Miller blocked Aidan O’Neill’s 22-yard field-goal try with 2:19 left. After forcing a three-and-out, Towson picked up 33 yards to reach the Big Green 39 with one second left. That’s when Douchee blocked O’Neill’s 56-yard attempt.

The Big Green (3-2) took a 20-10 lead in the third quarter when running back Abrm McQuarters took a backward swing pass to the right, then pulled up to hit Drew Hunnicutt for a 23-yard touchdown.

The Tigers’ Diondre Wallace picked off a pass by Jack Heneghan and returned it 20 yards to the Dartmouth 11. Deshaun Wethington cashed in with a 1-yard plunge to pull Towson (1-5) within a field goal late in the third quarter.

Wethington finished with 145 yards on 27 carries. Christian Summers and Andre Dessenberg combined for 23 receptions and had 140 yards apiece for the Tigers as Ellis Knudson passed for 305 yards.

HAMPTON 21, MORGAN STATE 12: Jaylian Williamson threw two touchdown passes, caught a touchdown pass on a trick play and the host Pirates (3-3, 3-1 MidEastern Athletic Conference) outlasted the Bears (2-3, 2-1).

After Morgan State fumbled a punt snap on its opening possession, Hampton wide receiver Twarn Mixson found Williamson for a 15-yard score with 7:40 left in the first quarter.

BOWIE STATE 38, VIRGINIA STATE 37: Amir Hall scored on a 2-yard run with 9:46 remaining in the game to lift the host Bulldogs (5-2, 4-0 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, 2-0 North) in a come-from-behind victory over the Trojans (5-2, 2-2, 1-1).

The win put Bowie State in first place in the CIAA North.

Hall completed 25 of 36 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns.

STEVENSON 45, WIDENER 21: The visiting Mustangs (6-0, 5-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) went on a 38-0 run to pull away from the Pride (4-2, 4-1).

Dan Williams went 18-for-26 for 240 yards and two touchdown passes to lead Stevenson.

FROSTBURG STATE 34, COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY 7: Freshman running back Jamaal Morant (Milford Mill) rushed for 188 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown to lead the Bobcats (5-1, 4-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference) over the host Lions (0-6, 0-5).

SALISBURY 77, WILLIAM PATERSON 19: Connor Canonico had 12 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown and Ryan Jones (Hereford) had nine carries for 78 yards and touchdowns to power the Sea Gulls (5-1, 4-1 NJAC) past the host Pioneers (2-4, 1-4). Salisbury led 21-0 after the first quarter. FRANKLIN & MARSHALL 25, MCDANIEL 7: The host Diplomats (5-1, 4-1 Centennial Conference) took an 18-0 lead in the first half and beat the Green Terror (1-5, 1-4).

Drew Scott led McDaniel’s defense with eight tackles.

Friday night

JOHNS HOPKINS 45, DICKINSON 10: The Blue Jays (6-0, 5-0 Centennial), ranked No. 8 in Division III, scored 35 points in just under 15 minutes between the second and third quarters Friday night to turn a tight game into a rout of the host Red Devils (0-6, 0-5).

Hopkins tied the conference record for consecutive league wins with its 33rd, dating to the final game of the 2012 season. Western Maryland (now McDaniel) set the original record from 1997 to 2001, when the Blue Jays ended the Green Terror’s run with a 21-14 victory.
