Director of pitching development Peterson will not return in 2017
The Orioles have yet another coaching position to fill this offseason. Rick Peterson, a well-known former major league pitching coach who has served as the Orioles’ director of pitching development for the past five seasons, will not return for 2017. “I appreciate Rick Peterson’s effort and good work for five years to develop pitching at all levels for the O’s and wish him well,” Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said Saturday in a text message. The organization now has vacancies in its top three pitching coaching positions. Major league pitching coach Dave Wallace retired from on-field major league coaching at the end of the season. Bullpen coach Dom Chiti left to become the Atlanta Braves’ director of pitching, and Wallace joined him as the Braves’ special assistant for pitching. Peterson was one of Duquette’s first hires, brought on in January 2012 to work with pitching at all levels of the organization. Peterson played a major role in the Orioles’ employing a biomechanical testing program during spring training that analyzed pitchers’ deliveries. The Orioles are in the final stages of hiring a pitching coach, then will move on to bullpen coach. Former Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell and Double-A Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills are among those who have interviewed and are under consideration for those positions, respectively. MASNsports.com first reported that Peterson would not return. — senior forward Brittani LaFollette (Sparrows Point) was named second-team All-Landmark Conference.
