Terps move on to second round of NCAA tournament

Second-seeded Maryland advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 victory in a shootout over visiting Massachuse­tts. UMass (14-8) scored in the first 10 minutes, and the Terps (18-4) pushed for the equalizer throughout the game, finally tying the game with Grace Balsdon’s penalty stroke with 1:05 to play. Maryland continued to put offensive pressure on the Minutewome­n throughout the 30 minutes of overtime, taking nine shots to UMass’ four. In the stroke-off, the Terps converted their first three attempts and denied the Minutewome­n’s. Maryland will host North Carolina today at 2 p.m. MORE: Salisbury senior midfielder Hannah Miller (Severna Park) was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the All-CAC first team by Salisbury senior forward Becca Rinaca (North Harford), Salisbury senior defender Annah Brittingha­m, Salisbury freshman defender Jillian Hughes and York senior defender Sydney Lamarsh (Chesapeake­Anne Arundel). The second team includes Salisbury senior forward Abbey Shobe, St. Mary’s senior forward Carly Todd, Frostburg State senior midfielder Taylor Bowen, St. Mary’s senior midfielder Brady Wolf (McDonogh), Frostburg State senior goalie Jacqueline Gover (Glenelg) and Salisbury junior goalie Tressie Windsor.
