UMBC falls to Richmond men, 78-75

ShawnDre’ Jones scored 19 points, including eight straight free throws in the final minute, to help host Richmond hold off UMBC, 78-75, on Saturday night.

A 3-pointer by Joe Sherburne got UMBC within one with 15 seconds left, but Jones made four free throws and T.J. Cline two to counter four points from Jairus Lyles.

Cline and Khwan Fore added 15 points each for the Spiders (5-4) to end a two-game losing streak and end a three-game winning streak for the Retrievers (7-2).

Lyles matched his season high with 29 points. Sherburne added 19. UMBC led 41-33 at halftime behind 19 points from Lyles. LOYOLA MARYLAND 84, BINGHAMTON 80, OT: Jarred Jones (John Carroll) scored a season-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds to help the visiting Greyhounds (5-5) win.

Jones made a layup and Chancellor Barnard (Glenelg Country) dunked to help the Greyhounds (5-5) to an 83-78 lead with 1:09 to go in overtime. The Bearcats (7-5) closed to 88-85 with five seconds left but got no closer, and Chuck Champion made two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

TOWSON 90, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON 87: Mike Morsell made two free throws with 18 seconds left to build a seven-point cushion, and the host Tigers (6-4) held on to beat the Knights (2-7) in a game with a combined 84 free throws.

Morsell and John Davis each scored 18 points to lead Towson (6-4), with Morsell shooting 12-for-16 at the foul line. William Arnaud Adala Moto was 8-for-10 at the line and scored 14 points as the Tigers took advantage of 32 fouls to score 36 points on free throws.

WAGNER 68, MORGAN STATE 66: Corey Henson scored 19 points, including the game-winning free throws with 22 seconds left, and the Seahawks (3-5) beat the host Bears (3-7).

BUFFALO 87, COPPIN STATE 52: Willie Conner hit a career-high eight 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, CJ Massinburg scored 15 and the host Bulls (5-5) cruised past the Eagles (0-12).

LEHIGH 90, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 71: Tim Kempton scored a career-high 31 points and tied his career best with 18 rebounds, and the visiting Mountain Hawks (4-5) used a big second-half run to pull away from the Mountainee­rs (1-10).

Women

LOYOLA MARYLAND 70, UMBC 65: The Greyhounds (4-5) used tough defense to hold the host Retrievers (2-7) scoreless for three minutes in the second half and closed out the game by making six straight free throws.

HOWARD 95, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 62: The host Bison (2-6) opened with a 30-13 run to cruise past the Mountainee­rs.
