Gilchrist Center’s Holly Ball

Jane Smith, 52, brings the same sensibility to “decorating” herself that she does to decorating interiors, like those of her family homes and the restaurants owned by her husband, David Smith’s, Bagby Restaurant Group — Ten Ten American Bistro, Fleet Street Kitchen and Cunningham’s.

“I like finding something no one else has — antiques that you can repurpose,” she said. “I guess I dress that way, too. ”

Fun and fabulous, as the Hunt Valley resident demonstrated at this year’s Holly Ball, shimmering in a vintage 1990s gold knit Dior gown. It was only the second time she’d worn it. The first was the occasion for which she had bought it — the couple’s 10th anniversary this summer.

Dressing up comes more naturally to Jane Smith. Although she was born in Salisbury, Smith’s family moved to Houston when she was young, and she says she grew up with a certain Texas mindset.

“Texas women go all out. Especially in the ’70s and ’80s. …You can never be overdressed; that’s our motto,” she said with a laugh.

However, it all comes down to fashioning the right emotional response. Smith believes that just as a room should make you feel comfortable, so should your look. “At the end of the day, it’s really about how you feel. If it’s cut right and it fits you right, you feel confident,” she said.

HER GO-TO STYLIST: Her daughter, Samantha Dinges, Sinclair Broadcast Group news style consultant. “I like her youthful spin on things. I don’t want to look like a 28-year-old girl, but I like her ideas. She sees things differently. She can put things together that I would never dream of, like putting a pattern with another pattern.”
