Blast get revenge against Wave, 5-2

Goalie William Vanzela made 13 saves as the Blast avenged a 7-2 loss to the Wave on Jan. 21 by beating Milwaukee, 5-2, on Saturday night before an announced 9,722 at Royal Farms Arena. The Blast, in first place in the Eastern Division of the Major Arena Soccer League, improved to 10-5; the Wave fell to 10-6. Lucas Roque had a goal and an assist in the victory, and Andrew Hoxie, Juan Pereira, Geaton Caltabiano and Vinicius Dantas also scored. The Blast will host the Syracuse Silver Knights (6-8) on Feb. 17 at 7:35 p.m. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Taylor McCarley scored 21 points, including the goahead layup with 45 seconds left, to lift host UMBC (11-12, 6-4 America East) to a 66-62 victory over Maine (12-13, 5-5). Laura Castaldo added 12 points for the Retrievers . ... Sarita Condie had a game-high 19 points, but host Navy (16-6, 9-2 Patriot League) fell, 69-61, to Colgate (8-14, 5-6), ending a nine-game winning streak . ... Stephanie Karcz scored a career-high 23 points but visiting Loyola Maryland (9-13, 5-6 Patriot League) fell, 67-48, to Army West Point (16-6, 7-4). Karcz added a game-high five steals for the Greyhounds. Madison Hovren had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Black Knights . ... Redshirt junior guard Genesis Lucas had 20 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals as Coppin State (5-16, 5-4 MEAC) earned a 55-49 road win over UMES (9-11, 3-6). FISHING: David Sikorski was named executive director of Coastal Conservati­on Associatio­n Maryland. Sikorski is a member of the Striped Bass and Atlantic Menhaden Advisory Panels for the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and is the chairman of the Sport Fisheries Advisory Commission to Maryland DNR. He has volunteere­d with CCA Maryland for more than a decade and is chairman of its government relations committee. SHORT-TRACK FIGURE SKATING: Thomas Hong (Maryland, Atholton) just missed the 1,500meter B final at the World Cup Dresden in Germany.
