Northwestern girls win Division II city crown
Northwestern hit its stride late in the third quarter and beat Southwestern, 61-36, to win the City Division II girls championship at Coppin State on Saturday.
“We came out flat and I knew that was going to happen,” Wildcats coach Jermaine Dunn said. “Sometimes it’s hard to get up for a team that you beat by a lot. I knew they were going to be very aggressive and they’re a real scrappy team . ... They killed us on the boards. They didn’t give up, but I’m glad our second half was better.”
NATIONAL ACADEMY FOUNDATION WINS CITY BOYS DIVISION II TITLE:
The Eagles made plays in the fourth quarter to pull away from New Era for a 44-35 win at Coppin State. Sparrows Point and Owings Mills each crowned three individual champions, but the Pointers added seven more wrestlers in the top six and held off the Eagles for the team title at the Baltimore County wrestling tournament at Perry Hall High.
Owings Mills had four wrestlers place in the top six. the class of the county in wrestling, with Old Mill sandwiching consecutive titles in 2014 and 2015 around titles for the Seahawks in 2012 and 2016.
CARROLL COUNTY TOURNAMENT: South Carroll (183.50 points) won the event in convincing fashion, beating out runnerup Winters Mill (143) and Century (124).
