Mount takes NEC regular-season title

Jones’ late basket beats Loyola; UMBC edged in 2OT; Bowie wins title

Elijah Long (John Carroll) had 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Mount St. Mary's clinched the Northeast Conference regular-season title for the first time in 21 years with a 77-62 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday.

Miles Wilson (Mount Saint Joseph) added 17 points and Junior Robinson 10 for Mount St. Mary's (16-15, 14-4), which began the season 1-11 before winning its final nonconfere­nce game and dominating the conference schedule.

The Mountainee­rs led 42-40 with 14:14 remaining before Long's layup sparked a 20-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach, as the Terriers (4-27, 2-16) couldn't get back within single digits. Gianni Ford, whose previous career high was 13 points, made four 3-pointers and finished with 23 points for St. Francis Brooklyn, which has lost 16 straight. Glenn Sanabria added 12 points and Darelle Porter 10.

AMERICAN 64, LOYOLA MARYLAND 62: Charlie Jones’ only field goal in 40 minutes on the floor was a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to lift the visiting Eagles (8-21, 5-12 Patriot League) over the Greyhounds (14-15, 8-10).

Jones (Mount Saint Joseph) had a team-high eight rebounds with his 3-pointer after a kick-out from Sa’eed Nelson giving American a split of two-point outcomes with the Greyhounds this season. Delante Jones had three treys and led the Eagles (8-21, 5-13 Patriot) with 15 points, and Matt Cimino added 12 points.

Cam Gregory scored 20 points with 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds with Jarred Jones (John Carroll) adding 13 points and Andre Walker 10.

Loyola led 28-21 at halftime but the Eagles were 16 of 25 for 64 percent in the second half, making all six of their 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes. The Patriot League tournament begins Tuesday.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 94, UMBC 90, 2OT: Iba Camara scored the first eight points of the second overtime and the host Wildcats (19-11, 10-6) outlasted the Retrievers (18-11, 9-7) in a regularsea­son finale to clinch a home playoff berth for the third consecutiv­e year in the America East tournament.

Jairus Lyles scored 33 points for UMBC. Lyles and Will Darley (Dulaney) reached 1,000 career points.

BUCKNELL 82, NAVY 60: Kimbal Mackenzie had 18 points and seven assists to help the host Bison (23-8, 15-3 Patriot League) end the regular season with a win over the Midshipmen (15-15, 10-8).

Bucknell went on a 30-1 run — which included 25 straight points — in the first half and led 45-21 at halftime after holding Navy to 21 percent shooting.

Hasan Abdullah led Navy with 18 points after making 8 of 11 free throws.

MORGAN STATE 77, HAMPTON 70: Tiwian Kendley had 24 points, Phillip Carr had a double double and the host Bears (13-14, 10-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) held off the Pirates (12-15, 9-5) to end a six-game losing streak in the series.

UMES 65, DELAWARE STATE 64: Bakari Copeland scored 17 points and the visiting Hawks (11-18, 8-6 MEAC) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to win.

UMES trailed the Hornets 41-28 at halftime and 48-36 with 12:23 to play. The Hawks outscored Delaware State 24-12 over the next 9:24 and tied the score on a 3-pointer by Ryan Andino with 2:59 left.

CHRISTOPHE­R NEWPORT 63, SALISBURY 62: Tim Daly made a jumper with two seconds left to lift the host Captains (25-2) over the Sea Gulls (20-7) in the Capital Athletic Conference championsh­ip game.

Salisbury was held scoreless over the final 1:44.

BOWIE STATE 62, FAYETTEVIL­LE STATE 54: Ahmaad Wilson (Randallsto­wn) scored a game-high 20 points and the Bulldogs (16-14) beat the Broncos (13-16) to claim the Central Intercolle­giate Athletic Associatio­n title game in Charlotte, N.C.
