Ex-coach Walter is state’s first honoree
Longtime Arundel baseball coach won 670 games, record 10 state titles
Former Arundel baseball coach Bernie Walter is one of 11 individuals selected for the 2017 class of the National High School Hall of Fame administered by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Walter is the first inductee from Maryland, which was the only state without one.
Walter won 670 games during a career that ended in 2009, earning 15 regional titles and a record 10 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state championships.
His teams finished second in the state tournament three times and won 16 Anne Arundel County titles. His 1993 team was selected mythical national champion by Collegiate Baseball.
Walter won 80 games in six years at Archbishop Curley to begin his career, and he served four years as director of baseball operations at Maryland after retiring from Arundel.
He coached the USA Baseball junior team to medals in 1986 (bronze), 1988 (gold) and 1990 (bronze).
Walter was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007, and he was a contributor to the Coaching Baseball online course on the NFHS Learning Center.
He was a four-time National Coach of the Year, including the NFHS baseball Coach of the Year in 1996.
Among the others selected to the Hall are former New York Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson and recordsetting softball pitcher Lisa Fernandez.
