Five shot, two fatally, in two separate incidents, Baltimore police say
Two men were killed, and three others were wounded in two shootings Saturday, Baltimore police said. Officers were called about 6 a.m. to the 200 block of Pearl St., just north of the University of Maryland Medical Center campus, for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found two men who had been shot, and they were taken to an area hospital where they died, police said. The men were identified as Douglass Holt, 36, of the 3200 block of Vulcan Road and Maurice Walker, 27, of the 200 block of N. Hilton St. Police were called about 9:45 a.m. to a triple shooting at North and Homewood avenues north of Green Mount Cemetary in East Baltimore. Officers found two of the victims at the scene, and they were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Police said the third victim took himself to a hospital. Homicide detectives are investigating the incidents. According to the city health department, the goal of the program is to reduce high health care costs and improve the health of and quality of care provided to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. The department will focus on narrowing “the gap between clinical care and community services,” according to the written announcement. "As an emergency physician, I have seen how health outcomes are impacted not only by the medical care we provide, but also by underlying social needs — including housing and food access, transportation, and access to mental health and addiction services," said Dr. Leana Wen, the city health commissioner. “We must systematically identify and address these social needs in order to move the needle on health outcomes.”
