With the bulk of its roster absent for the opening-round game of the Gay Petrlick Memorial Tournament against Patapsco on Saturday, Hammond saw numerous JV call-ups step up and help earn the 16-15 win.

The host Golden Bears improved to 3-2, and the Patriots fell to 4-3.

“I thought they did well,” Hammond coach Bill Smith said. “There was a couple that surprised us … but we have enough depth now that some of the JV girls can step in and help us.”

Aryss Lindsey pushed the Golden Bears’ lead to three with 3:44 left in the game, and Patapsco added two more scores within the final 40 seconds but couldn’t complete the rally.

Lindsey and Rachel Hall finished with four goals each for Hammond. Carli Abt had four goals and Dersha Horrey finished with 10 saves for the Patriots.

The Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead at the start of the game, with Lindsey scoring back-to-back goals off rebounds on free position opportunities.

The Patriots, playing with just 11 players, responded with two consecutive scores to tie the game. They kept pace with Hammond throughout the game, and tied the score three times before Abt gave them their first lead of the game with 3:10 remaining in the half.

Abt added another score shortly after, which was followed with a free position goal by Katie Brown to extend the Patriots’ advantage to three with less than a minute left.

However, with 41 seconds to spare, Amirah Hewitt ended Patapsco’s 5-0 run by putting away her shot from the center hash mark to cut the deficit to 9-7 at the break.

“I thought our transitions did really well,” Patriots coach Savannah Clough said. “We really looked for the open players. We definitely got shut down on rolling the crease, and that’s our hot spot. But I think they did really well, they worked together as a team.”

Hammond came out strong defensively in the following 25 minutes. Patapsco won three straight draw controls to start the second half, but two defensive stands led to transition goals by Hall and Lindsey, with Jane Ridgell assisting on both plays.

NO. 4 NOTRE DAME PREP 22, BRONXVILLE (N.Y.) 9: The host Blazers (9-0) had 14 players score against the Broncos.

Grace Haus and Sydni Rosa each had a hat trick for NDP.

ST. MARY’S 11, CAPE HENLOPEN (DELA.) 8: Whitney Albert scored four goals to help the host Saints (5-4) beat the Vikings.

St. Mary’s outshot Cape Henlopen 15-5.
