Glenelg boys hand Linganore first loss

Gladiators advance to 3A-2A state lacrosse final, 6-4; Eastern Tech softball wins

- By Tim Schwartz

Before the start of each game, the Glenelg boys lacrosse team huddles and ends the meeting with three words that every team works for: “Be the best.”

But in order to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best, and it’s been six years since the Gladiators finished as the last team standing with the state championship trophy. And with a 3-6 record less than a month ago, it didn’t look like that drought would end this season.

Fast-forward to Saturday and the Gladiators moved to within one victory of being state champions for a fourth time by handing defending state champion Linganore, winners of 33 straight games, its first loss of the season, 6-4, in a Class 3A-2A state semifinal game at Mount Hebron.

It’s the Gladiators’ 10th trip to the championship game and first since making it four years straight from 2010 to 2013. Glenelg coach Josh Hatmaker’s young and “goofy” group will try to extend their winning streak to 11 games when they will face Northern-Calvert, which beat Hereford, 10-8, in the other semifinal, for the state title Tuesday or Wednesday at Stevenson.
