A 16-day rail tour in Mongolia and Russia offers the opportunity to view landscapes as varied as forests and storied Lake Baikal and the chance to experience the cultures of the Mongols, Buryat and Russians. The tour from MIR Corp. has two dates: July 10-25 and Sept. 4-19. The July date coincides with the Naadam Festival in Mongolia, including the opening ceremony, archery and wrestling competitions. Travel is on Trans-Siberian trains. Among the highlights of the route from Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, to Moscow is a visit to a village of Old Believers, whose Orthodox sect members were sent to Siberia in the 17th century for refusing to change their rituals. There will also be a night spent in Listvyanka village, on the shores of Lake Baikal, the deepest lake on the planet and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visits with local families in various locations are part of the itinerary, as is spending a night in a ger, a traditional Mongolian tent. The trip, limited to 16 people for each date, is priced from $7,295 per person, double occupancy. International air is extra. Info: 800-424-7289,
