Elon edges Towson in double overtime

Bowie State, Hopkins pour on points in wins

ELON, N.C. — Owen Johnson lifted Elon to its eighth-straight victory with a 26-yard field goal in the second overtime to edge Towson 33-30 on Saturday.

Dondre Howell blocked Towson’s 33-yard field goal try to end the Tigers’ previous possession. The winning kick was Johnson’s fourth field goal of the game.

Brelynd Cyphers had 14 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown for Elon (8-1, 6-0 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n), and De’Sean McNair finished with 107 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Towson (3-6, 1-5) fell behind 27-10 but rallied in the fourth quarter with two quick touchdowns followed by a short field goal by Aidan O'Neill to tie it with 1:20 left and force overtime. Both teams hit field goals with their opening overtime possession­s.

Morgan State out-gained the Wildcats in total yardage, 504 to 471, and got 218 yards and two touchdowns from Eric Harrell, who had 19 carries. DeAndre Harris had touchdown throws to Dushon David and Manassah Bailey.

BOWIE STATE 77, ELIZABETH CITY STATE 21: Robert Chesson (Old Mill) had 20 carries for 304 yards and seven touchdowns to power the visiting Bulldogs (9-1, 4-1 Central Intercolle­giate Athletic Associatio­n) past the Vikings (4-6, 1-3).

The win clinched the Northern Division title for Bowie State. The Bulldogs opened with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed.

JOHNS HOPKINS 57, JUNIATA 14: David Tammaro went 18 for 27 for 264 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the host Blue Jays (8-1, 7-1 Centennial Conference) past the Eagles (3-6, 2-6).

Johns Hopkins is in a first-place tie with Franklin & Marshall entering the final game of the regular season.
