Stanley Waters, Coast Guard worker

Stanley Gomez Waters Sr., a retired Coast Guard civilian employee, died of cancer Nov. 29 at his West Baltimore home. He was 62.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Fairfield and Westport, he was the son of William Waters, a shoe manufacturing employee, and Doris Miller, a Johns Hopkins Health Systems office assistant.

He attended Benjamin Franklin Middle School and was a 1973 graduate of Southern High School, where he played baseball. He also played football in his neighborhood.

Mr. Waters enlisted in the Army and served as a dental assistant in Germany. He was discharged at Fort Dix, N.J., and became a civilian employee at the Coast Guard Yard at Curtis Bay, where he was a painter. He retired several years ago.

Mr. Waters was an avid fisherman and crabber on the Chesapeake Bay. He was also a seafood cook and prepared his own catches.

He traveled with his mother on day trips to Lancaster County, Pa. He attended services at the New Refuge Deliverance Cathedral.

He followed the Orioles and was a Ravens fan.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Vaughn Greene Funeral Home, 4905 York Road.

Survivors include his son, Stanley Gomez Waters Jr. of Baltimore; his mother, Doris King of Baltimore; two brothers, Barry King and Osbourne King Jr. of Baltimore; three sisters, Calpurnia Compton of Baltimore, Amber Reaves of South Carolina and Suprenia Waters of Baltimore; and a granddaughter.
