Kevin McGeary assisted on the gametying goal and scored the game-winner as host Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse won a come-from-behind victory and upset No. 1 Duke, 10-9, Saturday.
The Quakers (2-1) trailed 9-6 in the fourth quarter before McGeary started a 4-0 run. He assisted on Simon Mathias’ game-tying goal with 3:07 left before scoring the game-winner seven second later.
It was Penn's only lead of the day, and it turned out to be enough. The Blue Devils (4-1) had a chance to tie in the final minute, but lost control of the ball behind the goal in the waning seconds and could not get a final shot.
The Quakers have hosted Duke three times at Franklin Field, and won all three.
“I thought Penn was terrific today,” said Duke coach John Danowski. “They were clearly the better team today. The second half they executed great. They won a ton of faceoffs, they were physical, they were tough. You have to tip your cap. They deserved to win.”
McGeary and Adam Goldner each finished with a hat trick for Penn. Justin Guterding, Brad Smith and Nakeie Montgomery each scored twice for Duke.
NO. 2 ALBANY 18, DREXEL 5: Justin Reh, Tehoka Naticoke and Kyle McClancy each scored three goals to lead the host Great Danes (2-0) past the Dragons (0-2).
Albany opened with a 6-0 run and were never threatened.
NO. 6 VIRGINIA 18, NO. 18 PRINCETON 15: Ian Laviano had five goals and a strong second half carried the host Cavaliers (4-0) past the Tigers (1-1).
Virginia outscored Princeton, 8-5, in the second half and extended its winning streak over the Tigers to six dating back to the 2005 season.
NO. 7 VILLANOVA 7, HOFSTRA 2:Nick Testa hada 12 saves and the visiting Wildcats (3-0) allowed the fewest goals in a game in almost 10 years as they defeated the Pride (0-2).
In the first meeting since 2009, when both teams were in the Colonial Athletic Association, Villanova dominated from the early minutes and took a 3-0 lead in one minute of playing time.
NO. 8 NOTRE DAME 11, RICHMOND 7: Brendan Gleason had a hat trick and Bryan Costabile (Mount Saint Joseph) and Mikey Wynne (St. Paul’s) scored two goals each to lead the host Fighting Irish (2-0) past the Spiders (2-2).
NO. 16 SYRACUSE 11, NO. 9 ARMY WEST POINT 10, 3OT: Ryan Simmons scored the game-winner with 3:21 left in the third overtime to lift the host Orange (2-1) over the Black Knights (3-1). Syracuse went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-9 lead before Army’s Conner DeWitt tied the score with 5:11 left in regulation.
NO. 11 YALE 15, MICHIGAN 11: Jack Tigh scored five goals to lead the host Bulldogs (1-1) past the Wolverines (2-2).
Yale used a 9-3 run in the second half to win.
NO. 13 RUTGERS 12, FAIRFIELD 7: Jules Heningburg had four goals and two assists to lead the host Scarlet Knights (3-1) past the Stags (1-2). Rutgers broke a 1-1 score with a 3-0 run. ROBERT MORRIS 12, NO. 15 PENN STATE 9: Jimmy Perkins had a hat trick and the visiting Colonials (2-2) upset the Nittany Lions (2-2). Robert Morris trailed by one before going on a 6-2 run in the fourth quarter to win.
NO. 17 VERMONT 10, QUINNIPIAC 5: The visiting Catamounts opened with a 5-0 run and improved to 5-0. The Bobcats fell to 1-2. Rob Hudson had a career-high five points on two goals and three assists.
BUCKNELL 13, NO. 20 COLGATE 10: The visiting Bison (3-1, 1-0 Patriot League) went on a 5-3 run in the fourth quarter to beat the Raiders (3-1, 0-1). Connor O’Hara had four goals for Bucknell.
