Spencer, Savio and defense lead Loyola; Wade sparks Navy

Pat Spencer (Boys’ Latin) had four goals and three assists, tying the Patriot League career assists record in the third quarter, Bailey Savio went 17-of-25 on faceoffs, and No. 11 Loyola Maryland’s defense held No. 17 Lehigh to six goals in the first 52 minutes.

And, the visiting Greyhounds (7-3, 5-1) won 16-10 over the Mountain Hawks (8-4, 5-2) Saturday.

Spencer’s final assist of the game was the 142nd of his career, matching the total posted by the U.S. Military Academy’s Tim Pearson from 1999-2002. Spencer’s total have come in only 44 career games.

Savio had his best day at the faceoff dot as a Greyhound, winning 17 times and picking up seven ground balls. His work to gain possession helped Loyola’s defense as it held Lehigh to 19 shots through the first three quarters.

Loyola scored the game’s first seven goals before the Mountain Hawks broke through with a transition goal at 3:38 in the second quarter. The Greyhounds would go on to take a 10-1 lead less than four minutes into the second half.

Peter Swindell recorded both of his career-high two goals in the game’s first 13 minutes, and Spencer had a hat trick before the first quarter was over.

The teams combined for three turnovers in the first five minutes with Foster Huggins closing out on Lehigh’s Lucas Spencer to put the ball on the ground and get possession for Loyola at 11:04 in the opening quarter.

NAVY 12, COLGATE 10: Ryan Wade posted six points and the host Mids (7-4, 6-1 Patriot League) beat the Raiders (6-5, 2-4).

Navy closes its conference schedule next Saturday when it travels to West Point to take on archrival Army (5-5, 2-4). The Midshipmen would finish in no worse than a three-way tie by beating the Black Knights.

Senior midfielder Casey Rees (Boys’ Latin), senior attackman David Little and freshman attackman Christian Daniel scored two goals each for Navy, which is seeking its third Patriot League regular season championsh­ip in the past four seasons Wongus completed his hat trick by scoring the game-winner with 6:50 left to play as the host Sea Gulls (10-3) beat the Cavaliers (10-2) before starting Capital Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Mary Washington at 1 p.m.

Salisbury led 8-5 with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Cabrini responded with a 3-0 run and tied the game with 10:02 remaining.
