Patterson Mill boys reach 1A lax final

Huskies ride balanced attack; Glenelg girls secure spot in 2A lacrosse final

- By Chris Jeter

On an afternoon in which the 143rd Preakness stakes took place roughly 45 miles away, the Patterson Mill boys lacrosse team stampeded through McDonough, 17-4, in its Class 1A state semifinal matchup at James R. Harris Stadium in Havre de Grace.

The win advances the Huskies to the 1A state championship game for the third time in seven years and the first time since 2013.

It was a team effort for the Huskies offensively, as 11 of their players scored at least once. Chance Urban, Tom Nicosia, Nick Repke and Blake Tallon all tallied multiple goals for Patterson Mill, with Urban and Repke each picking up hat tricks. This also marked the fifth consecutive game (dating back to their regular season finale against Perry Hall) in which Patterson Mill scored at least 10 goals.

After allowing just one goal in their quarterfinal tilt with Largo, the Rams looked overwhelmed by the Huskies’ relentless attack. Patterson Mill spent the majority of the first quarter—and the game—on the attacking end of the field. Whenever the Huskies scored, they quickly snatched another possession either via a faceoff win or a faulty pass by McDonough.

NO. 6 SEVERNA PARK 9, LEONARDTOWN 7: All nine starters had at least one hit, four Falcons had multi-hit games and five different Severna Park players drove in runs as the team defeated the Raiders (20-6) in the Class 4A East Region final at Blandair Regional Park.

In the process, Severna Park (20-3) won its second straight region crown, third in four years and eighth overall. The Falcons will play Class 4A North Region champion C.H. Flowers Tuesday at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda. Game time is either 4 or 7 p.m.

NO. 14 MARRIOTTS RIDGE 11, KENT ISLAND 5: Logan Frank paced the Mustangs (16-2) with a season-high four goals to help beat the Buccaneers (14-3) in a Class 2A state semifinal at Northeast.

Marriotts Ridge will face Hereford, a nine-time state title winner, in the finals.

“The guys bought in,” Marriotts Ridge coach Tony Incontrera said. “It’s just like this just started in May where we all of the sudden got on a run. The guys bought in during the offseason, bought into putting the time in the weight room, putting the time on the wall, and it followed through to the season.”
