Retrievers pour it on in romp

UMBC men score 64 in second half; Retrievers women win 3rd in row

UMBC sophomore Brandon Horvath (Southern) had career highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds in as the host Retrievers scored a school record 64 second-half points in a 93-45 victory over Shenandoah in the Bimini Jam, Saturday.

The Retrievers evened their record at 1-1, while the game was an exhibition for the NCAA Division II Hornets (0-0).

Brandon Horvath competed against his younger brother, Alex, a freshman for the Hornets and Southern high school grad. Alex Horvath made a 3-pointer was given a flagrant foul for hooking Brandon Horvath in the post.

Four Retrievers scored in double figures, including Joe Sherburne, who scored all 16 of his points in the second half. Max Curran added 12 points and K.J. Jackson added 10 as 11 of the 12 Retrievers dressed hit the scoring column.

Christophe­r Chaney led the Hornets with 12 points.

UMBC led 29-24 in the first half, after committing 11 miscues and missing on 9-of-12 3-point attaempts. The Retrievers had an 18-0 run in the second half. UMBC piled up 52 points in the paint — to 16 for Shenandoah — blocked three shots and had 11 steals. Jose Placer led with five assists.

Shenandoah was held to 27.1 percent shooting (16-of-59) for the game and had 20 turnovers.

N.C. STATE 95, UMES 49: Torin Dorn had 22 points and 10 rebounds to help the host Wolfpack (2-0) beat the Hawks (0-2) in their Wolfpack Classic.

D.J. Funderburk and Jericole Hellems added 13 points each for N.C. State, which opened the game with a 23-4 run and never trailed. Braxton Beverly added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Dorn outscored UMES, 17-15, in the first half as N.C. State built a 36-point lead.

The Wolfpack won for the 25th time in their last 26 nonconfere­nce home games and improved to 31-1 all time against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

N.C. State shot 56.5 percent from the field (35 of 62) and finished with a 50-7 advantage in bench scoring.

A.J. Cheeseman led UMES with 18 points. Ryan Andino added 14 points. The Hawks shot 31.5 percent, including 5 of 19 from 3-point range.

DAYTON 76, COPPIN STATE 46: Obi Toppin scored 19 on 8-of-10 shooting, Ryan Mikesell had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Flyers (2-0) beat the Eagles (0-2) in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Dayton dominated both halves, leading by as much as 25 before the intermissi­on and extending the lead to 76-37 before the Eagles (0-2) closed the game on a 9-0 run. It was the first time since a 67-46 win over Saint Louis on January 22, 2017, that the Flyers held an opponent under 50 points.

Jordan Davis added 13 points for Dayton, which shot 30 of 61 from the field. The Flyers struggled from the 3-point line, making only 4 of 22, but Coppin State was even worse from long range at 3 of 24 and shot 29.6 percent (16 of 54) overall from the field. Dejuan Clayton led the Eagles with 13 points.

UMBC 72, USTA 58: Janee’a Summers scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Retrievers (3-0) past the Roadrunner­s (1-1) at the Seton Hall Classic.

UMBC went on a 20-7 run in the second quarter. Other double digit scorers for the Retrievers included: Dominika Skyrocka (15 points), Te’yJah Oliver (14 points) and Lucrezia Ccosta (10 points).
