RAVENS

The Ravens have waived Daylon Mack, the team announced Saturday, parting ways with the second-year defensive tackle in a surprise move that raises concerns about the team’s depth up front.

Undrafted rookie punter Dom Maggio (Boys’ Latin) was also waived, ensuring that the Ravens’ roster size will be in accordance with the NFL’s 2020 limit before football activities start Monday in

Owings Mills.

Mack, a fifthround pick out of Texas A&M, played in just one game as a rookie before being placed on the injured reserve (knee) in November. He reported to training camp Monday and was expected to contend for snaps behind starting nose tackle Brandon Williams.

Now Justin Ellis, who played in four games last season after signing with the Ravens in November, is the likely backup.

With the departure of Michael Pierce, who signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason before opting out of the 2020 season because of medical concerns, the Ravens will rely heavily on the 31-year-old Williams to plug the middle of opposing lines. Williams missed two games last season with a knee injury, and Ellis dealt with foot and knee injuries over the past two seasons.

Undrafted rookie Aaron Crawford, a solid run stopper at North Carolina, could contend for a roster spot, though he played at under 300 pounds in college. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta also could address his interior defensive line with a freeagent acquisition.

Mack’s release marks the latest setback for a franchise that has
