Black-Eyed Susan to run alongside the Preakness

Maryland’s most prestigiou­s race for 3-year-old fillies, the $250,000 BlackEyed Susan, will be run this year as part of the Preakness Day program on Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course.

First run in 1919 as the Pimlico Oaks, the 1 1⁄8-mile Black-Eyed Susan, a Grade 2 event, was originally scheduled for May 15 on the eve of the Preakness Stakes. The Preakness had its 145th edition reschedule­d from May 16 to anchor a revamped Triple Crown series amid the ongoing coronaviru­s pandemic.

College football: Maryland wide receiver DJ Turner has entered the transfer portal, he announced Friday, citing the Big Ten’s decision to postpone the football season.

He’s the first known Terp football player to announce his intention to transfer since the conference pushed back the start of the season because of medical concerns surroundin­g COVID-19.

“After the decision was made by the BIG 10 to postpone the season, my family and I weighed the options to determine what the best course of action would be to put myself in the best situation during these tough times,” Turner wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “After careful considerat­ion I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal.” Men’s college soccer: UMBC coach Pete Caringi, Jr. announced that juniors Jordan Ehart (Mount St. Joseph) and Quantrell Jones (Kenwood) and sophomore Julian Conze will serve as team captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
