Coleman able to show the way for Mids

-

Junior guard Jennifer Coleman posted a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Navy women’s basketball team past archrival Army 63-49 at Christl Arena on the campus of West Point.

Coleman also swiped four steals and dished off three assists in a superb all-around performance for the visiting Midshipmen, who led by as much as 26 points in the fourth quarter.

“Jen Coleman was pretty special today. She played under control and set the tempo from the beginning of the game,” Navy first-year coach Tim Taylor said. “We also executed our offense and hit some clutch 3s. When we can get 3s from five different players, it helps us space the floor for driving lanes.”

Senior guard Sophie Gatzounas totaled 16 points, four rebounds and three assists for Navy (2-5 overall, 2-1 Patriot League), which has now won two straight after starting the season five losses in a row.

Junior guard Kolbi Green contributed nine points and three assists, while sophomore forward Lindsay Llewellyn chipped in seven points and seven rebounds as the Midshipmen captured the Star game.

“We’re definitely happy to get this road win today,” said Taylor, who experienced his first victory over Army. “It is tough to win period, but to win on the road at your biggest rival is a great win. I thought we did an outstanding job defensively in contesting shots for the majority of the game.”

Junior guard Sarah Bohn scored 13 points to lead Army (5-7, 2-5), which shot just 27 percent (18-for65) from the field.

The Midshipmen and Black Knights will meet again Sunday (1 p.m.) at West Point.
