Maryland football playoffs begin
Soccer, field hockey reach state quarterfinals
Public school football teams throughout Maryland began their postseason on Friday night with regional quarterfinal contests, while field hockey and soccer teams decided which teams will play in next weekend’s state semifinal games.
Here are results from around the Baltimore region:
Football — region quarterfinals Class 4A East N. County 35, Annapolis 21 Old Mill 70, Meade 0 Parkville 34, Glen Burnie 14 Class 3A East Chesapeake-AA 57, Crofton 16:
The host Cougars scored on their first offensive play jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter to rout the Cardinals. Chesapeake senior running back Victor Listorti became the program’s all-time leading rusher and scored twice on runs of 13 and 72 yards. He finished with 10 carries for 126 yards, giving him 1,585 on the season.
Long Reach 48, Bennett 8 Class 3A North Edgewood 30, Aberdeen 14:
Senior Lavar Banks carried the ball just four times but piled up 93 yards and two touchdowns to lead Edgewood (7-3) past Aberdeen (3-6). Franklin 49, Towson 3
Manchester Valley 41, Patapsco 12: Trent Onkst had two rushing touchdowns and Markel Brown had two touchdown receptions to lead the host Mustangs (7-3) over the Patriots. Patapsco took a 6-0 lead before Manchester Valley scored 41 unanswered points.

Quarterback Bisi Owens scored four touchdowns as the No. 2 seed Gladiators (9-1) cruised to victory over the seventh-seeded Knights (1-8). Middletown 48, Hammond 12

Pikesville 27, Loch Raven 14
Joppatowne 44, Patterson Mill 14: Steven Robinson carried the Mariners (4-4) on both sides of the ball, rushing for 197 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries while posting 15 total tackles on defense in a win over the Huskies (2-7). Zach Horton added a 90-yard touchdown run and 12 total tackles, while
Sean Williams caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Robert Martin.

Class 4A/3A North
Kenwood 38, Catonsville 3: Senior Troy Dukes rushed for three touchdowns and the Kenwood defense bottled up the Comets’ offense. The fourth-seeded Bluebirds built a 30-0 lead by halftime and Dukes’ 42-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and a 2-point conversion made it 38-0 and started a running clock the rest of the game. Kenwood will travel to face No. 1 seed Dundalk (9-0) next week in a regional semifinal.

Arundel 36, Chopticon 15: The Wildcats will host South River next weekend.
South River 7, Great Mills 6: The visiting Seahawks scored a touchdown and made the game-winning extra point with 36 seconds left to advance.
Class 4A/3A West
Howard 18, Reservoir 14: Tyler Sabatini threw two touchdown passes to Tyler Baruch — the latter with three seconds left — to lift the Lions (4-6) past the Gators (3-6).

F.S. Key 34, Winters Mill 12: Nick Diehl scored on runs of 1 and 83 yards, Ryan Rill had 6- and 1-yard touchdown runs and Jarren Rutter punched one in from 1 yard out for FSK, which led 21-0 at halftime.
Kamdyn Koch caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Crouch for Winters Mills’ first score and Brady Forte had a 15-yard touchdown reception as time expired.

Running backs Jordan Harris and Hakim Simms both scored two rushing touchdowns, junior Gio Boone returned an interception for a touchdown and quarterback Nick Gutierrez scored once on the ground to lead the Cavaliers (10-0) to a shutout over the Gaels (7-3) to earn the No. 1 seed in the MIAA A Conference playoffs. Spalding will face either McDonogh or Gilman in a semifinal Friday night.

Westminster 2, Tuscarora 0: Anna Tippett made three saves and Miranda Moshang and Caroline Beakes each scored to lead the visiting Owls (9-6) over the Titans.

Glenelg 5, Queen Anne’s 0: Theresa Stiller had two goals and AJ Eyre had a goal and two assists to lead the Gladiators (14-1) past the Lions.
Manchester Valley 1, North Harford 0: Olivia Mitchell scored the game-winner to lift the host Mavericks (11-4) over the Hawks (8-8).

Liberty 2, Fallston 1 (2OT): Lucy Davidson and Riley Matthiessen scored for the Lions while Savanna Henderson scored the Cougars’ goal with an assist from Morgan Anthony. Liberty goalie Emma Meisser had six saves in the win.
Girls volleyball — region quarterfinals
Class 3A East
Marriotts Ridge 3, Mt. Hebron 0: The Mustangs (10-5) beat the Vikings (6-9), 25-18, 30-28, 25-14. Leah Liu had 10 kills and Evan Hull had 24 assists for Marriotts Ridge.
Long Reach 3, Wilde Lake 0: The host Lightning (4-12) beat the Wildecats (0-14), 25-17, 25-17, 25-20. Kailey Young had 16 kills and Hayley Norton had 36 assists for Long Reach.
