Elizabeth (Betty) Blackway Ruff, a Chestertow­n, Maryland native, was born on January 30, 1926 and died on February 25, 2024 at the age of 98. She was the daughter of the late James Edward and Ida Jester Blackway. She was the devoted wife of the late Robert Andrew Ruff, Jr. whom she met when they were college students. She was the loving mother of Judith Ruff Stocks, Robert Andrew Ruff, III (Shelly) and Barbara Elizabeth Sybert (William). She is survived by seven grandchild­ren - Jen, Devon (Reed), Blair (Meredith), Nicholas (Alyson), Ryan (Julie), Kirby and Emily. She was preceded in death by three greatgrand­children and is survived by four great-grandchild­ren - Tava, Winston, Ophelia and Mav. Mrs. Ruff graduated from Chestertow­n High School and attended Washington College in Chestertow­n, MD where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She graduated from the Union Memorial School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD, having received her RN degree and the Excellence in Nursing Award during her training years. She was then employed by Union Memorial. Mrs. Ruff had been a faithful member of Salem Lutheran Church in Catonsvill­e, MD. She served a term as a Chairwoman for Kent County in the former Women’s Eastern Shore Society and was a Past President the Rolling Hills Women’s Club of Catonsvill­e. In addition, she was active for many years in scholarshi­p work for the Baltimore District of Women’s Club, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and at the Charlestow­n Retirement Community where she resided. In addition, she worked with hospice at Charlestow­n. She was also very involved in her children’s schools as an activities volunteer and clinic nurse. Throughout her life, she loved to read, write poetry, play bridge and travel.
