John William ‘Bill’ Seitz, C&P manager

John William “Bill” Seitz, a retired Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone manager, died of a stroke Dec. 22 at Oak Crest Village. He was 87 and lived in Timonium and in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Born in Baltimore and raised on York Road, he was a 1941 Towson High School graduate. He served in the Army Signal Corps in the Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Seitz started with the telephone company as an installer and repairman in Cockeysville and had management positions in Baltimore, Harford and Washington counties for the remainder of his 42-year career. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was its deputy district governor. He was president of the Western Council and its Maryland chapter.

He worked on technology for people with disabilities. He assisted in the development of Teletypes for the deaf and smoke detectors for people with hearing impairments. He was given a Governor’s Award of Merit.

As a young man, Mr. Seitz enjoyed amateur sports. After retiring, he became an avid golfer and tennis player.

Mr. Seitz was a member of Timonium United Methodist Church and was past board of trustees president of the Jessops United Methodist Church in Sparks.

Services were held at the Oak Village Chapel on Dec. 26.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, the former Jeannette Winemiller; two sons, Scott William Seitz of Radford, Va., and Bruce Edward Seitz of Columbia; a daughter, Terri Seitz Parrish of Timonium; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
