Lehigh’s hot shooting downs UMES men

UMES men’s basketball team gave up 45 first-half points and host Lehigh went 9-for-16 from 3-point range to win, 82-55, on Tuesday.

The Patriot League leader, Lehigh (12-4) led by as many as 31over the Hawks (3-11) in a game that featured two ties and two lead changes.

UMES recovered in the second half, shooting 48.1 percent from the field and outscoring Lehigh 39-37. But Lehigh’s first-half lead carried it through the rest of the game. C.J. Mccollum finished with 18 points for Lehigh and Akeem Anderson had10 for UMES.

JOHNS HOPKINS 98, CITY COLLEGE (N.Y.) 66: Mike Rhoads scored 15 points to lead 13 Blue Jays in scoring as Hopkins (7-2) won its opener at the Blue Jay Invitation­al.

Hopkins hosts Hood in tonight’s final at 7 p.m. The Beavers (1-11) have lost 10 straight.

HOOD 71, RUTGERS-NEWARK 63: Lavar Rich went 7-for-8 from the field and the line for a game-high 21 points, and the Blazers (7-4) beat the Scarlet Raiders (7-5) in the opening round of the Blue Jay Invitation­al at Johns Hopkins.

Women

NAVY 67, NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 51: The host Mids (7-7) ended a four-game losing streak behind a game-high 24 points from Alix Membreno.

Navy took the lead early and held the Highlander­s (5-9) to14 points in the first half. The Mids never trailed and shot 45.1percent from the field in the game.

HOWARD 67, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 55: The host Mount (6-7) rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half, but the Bison (9-5) went on an11-0 run to secure the win. Kayla Grossett scored 14 points for the Mount.

JOHNS HOPKINS 62, OCCIDENTAL 51: The visiting Blue Jays (8-1) took a 36-21lead at the break and held on to win. Chantel Mattiola and Stephanie Fong scored 13 and 12 points, respective­ly, to lead Hopkins, which has won five straight.

GOUCHER70,PENNSTATE-HARRISBURG­44: The Gophers (3-8) used tough defense to limit the Nittany Lions (5-5) to one point in the opening six minutes. Sharnell Huff finished with a game-high 18 points for Goucher, which led 34-19 at the break and by as much as 28 during the second half.

FLORIDA INTERNATIO­NAL 77, MORGAN STATE 60: Jerica Coley recorded her third double double of the season and sixth of her career for the host Panthers (10-5). Dekeisha Mathis had 19 points for the Bears (2-10).
