Glenelg Country boys top No. 6 St. Frances, 57-55
Glenelg Country School made two more 3-pointers and four more free throws than visiting No. 6 St. Frances on Tuesday, and that difference lifted the Dragons boys basketball team over the Panthers, 57-55. St. Frances had lost to No. 3 Dunbar, 49-48, on Dec. 28. Glenelg Country took a16-13 lead after the first quarter before St. Frances switched to1-3-1and 2-3 zone defenses to spark a 14-8 run and take a 27-24 lead at the break.
The Dragons settled down by the close of the third quarter and held off the Panthers the rest of the way. Kevin Boyd had 19 points and Warren Powers added 15 points for Glenelg.
NO. 2 MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 56, MCDONOGH 39: The host Gaels (14-1) extended their one-possession halftime lead by converting five Eagles turnovers into 10 points in the second half.
In the first half, Mcdonogh (9-5) played tight defense to take away open jumpers and create seven turnovers. Despite all this, Mount St. Joseph led 23-21 at the break. When the Eagles misstepped in the third, the Gaels opened up their lead. Kameron Williams scored a game-high 25 points and Phil Booth added 19 for the Mount. Kayel Locke led Mcdonogh with 18 points.
NO. 5 JOHN CARROLL 52, CALVERT HALL 40: The visiting Patriots (15-3) maintained a two-possesssion lead in the second half to win. John Carroll’s Justin Jenifer had a game-high 19 points and Denzel Richardson scored 16 for the Cardinals (6-8).
NO. 7 CITY 59, MARITIME ACADEMY 48: Aaron Williams scored 11points and A.J. Fisher had 10 to power the host Knights (7-2) past the Anchors. City went on an 18-5 run in the second quarter to take a 33-18 lead at the half.
NO. 15 POLY 50, SOUTHWESTERN 46, OT: Chaz Brown, a 6-foot-9 center, scored four of his nine points in overtime and added key blocks to lift the visiting Engineers (7-3) over the Sabers. Southwestern was patient on offense and used a 3-2 zone to frustrate Poly throughout most of regulation.
GILMAN 66, CHAPELGATE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 38: Steven Koten scored 18 points to power the visiting Greyhounds (8-3) past the Yellowjackets. Gilman held a 23-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Ryan Ripken added 15 points for the Greyhounds.
ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 76, FRIENDS 40: Conner Lipinski put up 20 points, and the host Eagles (7-7) rolled. AACS led 50-18 at the half.
GRANITE BAPTIST 53, MOUNT AIRY CHRISTIAN 40: Jeremy Mason scored 16 points to keep the visiting Braves (8-0) perfect.
Girls basketball
NO. 6 POLY 55, SOUTHWESTERN 11: The host Engineers (9-0) held the Sabers to seven points in the first half. Teira Pendleton had 12 points for Poly.
NO. 10 JOPPATOWNE 60, HARFORD TECH 19: Shakara Head scored a game-high 22 points, and the visiting Mariners (8-1) led 26-4 after the first quarter.
Wrestling
NO. 5 OWINGS MILLS WINS TWO: The host Eagles (13-1) beat Towson, 70-3, and Randallstown, 65-3, to win their tri-match. Owings Mills used nine pins to beat the Generals.
NO.10 RIVER HILL 37, NO.12 GLENELG 31: The Hawks (14-5) fell behind 15-0 after three matches before rallying to win six of the last seven matches. River Hill used four forfeits and a pin by John Kum (195) over Michael Shin in a 1:23 to surge ahead.
NO. 11 NORTH COUNTY WINS TWO: The Knights (14-1) beat Southern, 57-15, and Northeast, 64-12, at a double dual. Cody Bieman (140) and Lorenzo Maddox (Hwt) each had two pins.
