No. 13 Broadneck outlasts South River in boys soccer, 2-1
No. 6 Seahawks upset No. 2 Bruins in volleyball, 3-0
No. 13 Broadneck didn’t manage a single shot on goal in the first half of Tuesday’s boys soccer game against South River. But the Bruins netted two goals in a 17-minute span in the second half to take down the talented but short-handed Seahawks, 2-1.
Broadneck (3-1) managed just five shots on backup goalkeeper Evan Markley.
Markley was subbing for John Flanagan, who suffered a back injury and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
“We didn’t capitalize on the chances we had and they came out in the second half, got a break on [Tyler] Gabarra’s goal and then [we] couldn’t match their intensity,” South River coach Jeff Vincent said.
After a scoreless first half, Gabarra deked to his left, went to his right to open some space and lifted a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the net, well beyond the outstretched hands of Markley.
Besides giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead with more than 31 minutes to play, the score delivered a shot of confidence to Broadneck, which Gabarra described as “flatfooted” for the entire first half.
NO. 5 RIVER HILL 1, HOWARD 0: Mike Heitzman scored on a penalty kick in overtime to lift the host Hawks (5-0) over the Lions (2-1).

MCDONOGHNO. 1: McDonogh took over the No. 1 spot in this week’s Maryland High School Football Media State Poll, supplanting DeMatha thanks to the Eagles’ win over nationally ranked Elder (Ohio) on Friday night.
The defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champs improved to 2-1 with their 24-14 win in Cincinnati.
That combined with DeMatha’s loss to La Salle (Pa.) boosted McDonogh to the top spot, with 10 first-place votes.
