University of Maryland officer shoots man in leg

-

University of Maryland police shot a man Friday near its downtown Baltimore medical center who they say was threatening people and had made a motion as if he was going to pull out a gun. University police received a call at 1:11 p.m. of an armed person in the 500 block of Russell St., Baltimore police spokesman Sgt. Jarron Jackson said. Jackson said officers came upon a man in the 500 block of Russell St. waving a knife. As the officers approached, Jackson said, the man reached into his waistband, and at least one of the officers, believing the man was about to pull a gun, shot him. The suspect was struck at least once in the leg, Jackson said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call them at 410-396-2100.
