Towson voted preseason favorite to win conference

Towson was voted by the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n’s head coaches as the preseason favorite for the 2016 title. The Tigers, who went 12-6 and added the 2015 tournament championsh­ip to the one they collected in 2013, received five of the six first-place votes and 25 points to top Hofstra, which had the other first-place vote and finished with 19 points. Towson also placed two players on the league’s All-CAA team: junior attackman Joe Seider, a Sparks resident and Hereford graduate, and redshirt senior goalkeeper Tyler White. Stephanie Jones (Aberdeen), Jenna Staiti and Sarah Myers also have signed with the Terps, giving coach Brenda Frese the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class, according to ESPN. “Overall this is one of the most elite classes we have signed in my time at Maryland,” Frese said in November. “It is a class that has firepower in every position. Every piece, every single player fits in the overall scheme of what we want to bring here to Maryland to help us continue to win championsh­ips.” WRESTLING: Former Navy wrestler Bryce Saddoris was named the U.S. Marine Corps Male Athlete of the Year. Saddoris has the most wins in Navy history and is the top-ranked wrestler in the 145.5-pound class by USA Wrestling. Saddoris, 27, is a captain and supply officer stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonvil­le, N.C. He was a silver medalist in the Pan American Games in February and hopes to make the U.S. Olympic team. The 5foot-7 Saddoris won 147 matches, eclipsing the record of 141 set by Matt Stolpinski (2005-2008). He was also a two-time All-American and a fourtime NCAA qualifier. NHL: The Washington Capitals reassigned defenseman Aaron Ness and forward Zach Sill to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
