O’s prospect Sisco homers in All-Star Futures Game

Orioles prospect Chance Sisco finished 1-for-2 with a solo home run, but the World rallied to beat the United States, 11-3, on Sunday night in the AllStar Futures Game in San Diego. Sisco, who plays for Double-A Bowie, homered to left-center off Francisco Rios of the Toronto Blue Jays’ High-A Dunedin to give the U.S. a 3-0 lead with one out in the fourth inning. Sisco has one homer in 251 atbats with the Baysox. Houston Astros prospect Alex Bregman finished a home run shy of the cycle for the U.S. Yoan Moncada, a Cuban who plays for the Boston Red Sox’s Double-APortland, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to earn Most Valuable Player honors and help the World end a six-game losing streak. MORE ORIOLES: High-A Frederick Keys third baseman Aderlin Rodriguez was named Carolina League Player of the Week. NBA: Former Maryland star Greivis Vasquez signed a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, according to a report from the website The Vertical. Vasquez, 29, will likely play behind guard Jeremy Lin, who signed a three-year, $36 million deal earlier this month. Vasquez’s past season with the Milwaukee Bucks was cut short after right ankle surgery to remove bone spurs. In six NBA seasons — with the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors and the Bucks — Vasquez has averaged nine points and 4.8 assists per game. COLLEGE WRESTLING: Maryland graduate Jimmy Sheptock, a two-time All-American, will join the Terps this year as an assistant coach. Sheptock spent the past two years at Drexel, where he helped guide the Dragons to their most dual-meet victories (10) since the 2008-09 season this past year. NHL: The Washington Capitals signed center Zach Sanford to a three-year entry-level contract. The 6-foot-4, 191-pound center led Boston College in assists (26), ranked third in points (39) and fifth in goals (13) this past season and finished his college career with 22 goals and 43 assists in 79 games. Sanford, 21, was drafted by Washington in the second round, 61st overall, in the 2013 NHL draft. Sanford is projected to spend most of next season with the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey, but Washington has indicated that it will use a 14th forward spot to give its prospects NHL experience. RADIO: Former “SportsCenter” host Bram Weinstein will replace Tony Kornheiser at ESPN 980 in Washington. Kornheiser, an ESPN personality who co-stars with Michael Wilbon on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” left in June to run his own podcast. The “Bram Weinstein Show” will debut on July 25, running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays. Weinstein, a Montgomery County native and former Washington Redskins beat reporter, left ESPN last spring. HORSE RACING: Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will make his next start at the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 31. Trainer Doug O’Neill said the 3-year-old colt turned in an impressive workout at Santa Anita racetrack in California, covering 5 furlongs in 59 seconds. O’Neill said it hasn’t been decided when Nyquist will be shipped to New Jersey, but the travel plans will likely be worked out in the near future. Nyquist was last year’s 2-year-old champion and wonhis first eight career starts before finishing third in the Preakness. He skipped the Belmont Stakes after it was discovered he had an elevated white blood cell count and has not raced since. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Washington Mystics guard-forward Kahleah Copper and center Stefanie Dolson were named to the 11-member USA Women’s Select Team. Dolson, a gold medalist on the 2014 USA World Championship Team, was a finalist for the Olympic team. The team will train alongside the national team July 23-24 in Los Angeles before an exhibition game July 25 at the USA Basketball Showcase at the University of Southern California before hosting Australia, Canada and France in a tournament July 27-31.
