WR Sullivan-Brown picks Penn State over UM

Terps lose out on three-star from Pallotti but add N.C. kicker with ‘rare’ ability

St. Vincent Pallotti wide receiver Cam Sullivan-Brown wrapped up his recruitment Friday when he picked Penn State over a host of schools that included Maryland, he announced on Twitter.

Sullivan-Brown, who earned All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association honors last fall, is rated as a three-star recruit in the 247sports.com composite rankings, which also place him as the No. 12 player in Maryland, No. 80 wide receiver nationally and No. 525 player overall. Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN all rank him as a three-star recruit.

In a tweet Friday announcing his imminent commitment, Sullivan-Brown referenced Penn State, Maryland, West Virginia, Duke and Syracuse.

Sullivan-Brown was offered by Penn State on April 6, and he’s the first recruit from Maryland to commit to the Nittany Lions this cycle. Last season, coach James Franklin signed five players from Maryland, including Gilman defensive lineman Ellison Jordan and Dunbar wide receiver Dae’lun Darien.

Maryland already has three wide receivers committed in its Class of 2017 in Georgia three-stars Sean Nelson and Carlos Carriere and Florida three-star MJ Jarrell. The Terps have oral pledges from four of the top 16 players in the state, and eight of those players are still uncommitted. Maryland adds kicker: South Mecklenburg (N.C.) kicker Jonathan Doerer became the 12th commitment in coach DJDurkin’s first full recruiting cycle Friday when he announced his commitment on Twitter.

Doerer is unranked by the major recruiting services, but he’s received accolades from a couple of prestigious kicking camps. Chris Sailer Kicking ranks Doerer as a five-star prospect and the No. 3 prospect in the Class of 2017 and refers to him as a “big time talent” with “perhaps the strongest leg in the nation in this class.”

Kohl’s Kicking ranks Doerer as a five-star prospect and No. 5 kicker in the class with his “rare” ability. He’s also ranked as a 41⁄ star punter and No. 26 punting prospect.

Maryland has three kickers on its roster: junior Adam Greene (Broadneck), junior Danny Sutton and freshman Mike Shinsky ( McDonogh). Greene, a former walk-on, appeared to have the lead for the kicking job coming out of spring camp, but Durkin has reiterated he’s open to competition at every position. Terps-Owls series: Temple officially announced Friday a home-and-home series with Maryland that will take place in 2018 and 2019. The series was previously reported in September 2013. There’s now confirmation from both schools on the two-game set.

The first game of the series will be in College Park on Sept. 15, 2018. The next season, the Terps will travel to Philadelphia on Sept. 14, 2019.
