Mount to reinstate men’s soccer for 2018 season

Mount St. Mary’s is reinstatin­g its NCAA Division I men’s soccer program, with competitio­n beginning with the fall 2018 season, the university announced. The program began play as a varsity sport in 1953. The Mountainee­rs joined NCAA Division I in 1988-89 and became members of the Northeast Conference in 1989-90. The program was discontinu­ed at the end of the 2012 season. The reinstatem­ent gives Mount St. Mary’s nine men’s sports and nine women’s sports; the university recently added men’s swimming and diving and women’s diving. MOREMEN’SCOLLEGESO­CCER: Navy allowed two goals in the first 6:02 and fell, 2-0, at College of Charleston in the season opener for both teams. ... WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Senior Taylor Sebolao’s eighth career shutout helped host Towson (0-2-1) to a 0-0 tie with St. John’s (2-0-1). ... Sophomore Bianca Gillman converted a second-half penalty kick for her first career goal, but the lead didn’t hold up as host Mount St. Mary’s (0-1-1) played to a 1-1 draw with Howard (2-0-1). COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: No. 6 Maryland earned a 6-2 win at Saint Joseph’s in the season opener for both teams. Seniors Grace Balsdon, Welma Luus and Emma Rissinger each scored twice. ... Goucher was picked in the Landmark Conference preseason poll to finish sixth in the eight-team league. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: Cheyna Williams scored in the 37th minute, Christine Nairn (Archbishop Spalding) converted in the 55th and the first-place Washington Spirit (11-3-2) held on for a 2-1 win over the host Orlando Pride (6-10). —
