Mets: Trying to make a push in the crowded NL playoff race, the Mets plan to skip struggling RHP Jacob deGrom’s next turn in the rotation. He’s 7-7 with a 2.96 ERA in 143 innings. He had been on a roll before getting rocked for 13 runs and 25 hits over 92⁄ innings in his last two outings. The Mets think a break will help deGrom correct a flaw in his delivery. ... Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera went back to back leading off the first and Wilmer Flores hit a grand slam as the Mets beat the Phillies 9-4.

Blue Jays: The Jays added depth at catcher for the stretch run by reacquirin­g veteran Dioner Navarro from the White Sox. Navarro, hitting .210 with six homers and 32 RBIs in 85 games, will back up Russell Martin. The Jays gave up minor-league LHP Colton Turner. ... Russell Martin and Justin Smoak each homered and drove in five runs in a 15-8 win over the Twins. The Jays took over the AL East lead.

Indians: Roberto Perez went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Abraham Almonte doubled twice and drove in four runs as the Indians routed the Rangers 12-1 in a matchup of the teams with the best records in the AL. Carlos Santana also went 3-for-4 in the Indians’ 17-hit attack.

Yankees: Rookie Gary Sanchez homered for the eighth time in nine games and drove in four runs in a 14-4 rout of the Orioles. Mark Teixeira and Chase Headley also homered as the Yanks moved five games over .500 for the first time. Yovani Gallardo gave up eight runs in 11⁄ innings, the shortest start of his career.

Tigers: Justin Verlander struck out eight in 72⁄ innings and Justin Upton homered for the fourth time in five games in a 4-2 win over the Angels. The Tigers have won five straight to move back into contention in the AL Central and wild-card races.

Nationals: Jayson Werth and Daniel Murphy hit solo homers and drove in two runs each and Gio Gonzalez earned his 100th career victory as the Nats beat the Rockies 8-5. Mark Melancon got his 37th save.
