Dunmoodie receives Ravens coaching honor

-

Centennial’s Carlos Dunmoodie was named the Ravens High School Football Coach of the Week on Thursday after leading the Eagles to their first victory in three years last week. After losing 20 straight games, the Eagles needed less than four minutes to score on quarterback Matt Schoenberger’s keeper last Friday night and they went on to defeat Hammond, 30-21. Last season, Centennial lost to Hammond, 40-0. The Eagles did not score more than 22 points in a single game. On Friday, they scored on their first three drives. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: Crystal Dunn and Cheyna Williams scored as the Washington Spirit beat the Seattle Reign, 2-1, on Wednesday night in Boyds to clinch homefield advantage in the playoffs and take a step closer to the Supporters’ Shield. The Spirit (123-3) is four points ahead of the Portland Thorns (10-3-5) with two matches left. Regardless of the first-place chase, Washington will host a semifinal Sept. 30 or Oct. 1 at Maryland SoccerPlex — the first home playoff match in the club’s four seasons. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Zach Abey (Archbishop Spalding) has moved up to No. 2 on Navy’s depth chart at quarterback behind Will Worth, a senior who took over in the opener Saturday when senior Tago Smith suffered a seasonending knee injury. Although an untested sophomore with no varsity experience, Abey said he thinks he is prepared to take control of the triple-option offense if called upon. “I’m ready to take the next step. I’m definitely confident. I’m comfortable with everything,” Abey said. The Midshipmen (1-0) will play Connecticut (1-0) on Saturday. MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Daniel Kwon (Severna Park) cut the deficit in half in the 83rd minute, but Navy (1-2-1) fell, 2-1, at Villanova (22-0). ... Brian Saramago scored in the fourth minute and Brennan Goldsmith in the 83rd as host Loyola Maryland (1-3) won, 2-0, against George Washington (1-1-2) on Wednesday night. WOMEN’SCOLLEGESOCCER: Clare MacAdam had two goals, helping host Navy (2-4-1) to a 5-3 victory over Maryland (2-4-1) on Wednesday night for the first time in 11 tries. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Loyola Maryland named Mary Wooley an assistant coach. She returns to the East Coast, where she played at the South Carolina-Aiken and coached at Temple before coaching at Southern California and Hawaii, where she was associate head coach the past three seasons. ... Towson promoted Erin Dickerson from assistant coach to associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: St. Mary’s senior Alli Graf (Broadneck) was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week. COLLEGE GOLF: Goucher named Texas graduate Hunter Brown its first men’s and women’s coach. The programs will begin competing in 2017-18. —
