Twins: SS Jorge Polanco homered and drove in four runs, 2B Brian Dozier added three more hits to his torrid second half and the Twins beat the Tigers 8-1 on Tuesday night. The Tigers lost for the third time in 14 games against the Twins, costing them precious ground in a crowded race for the second American League wild card.

Reds: 1B Joey Votto homered and drove in two runs, RHP Dan Straily threw a career-high eight innings and the Reds took advantage of some sloppy fielding to beat the Brewers 6-4 for their fifth straight win. Straily pitched around solo home runs by OF Keon Broxton and 2B Jonathan Villar to improve to 8-2 since the All-Star break. He allowed three hits and struck out eight.

A’s: PH Yonder Alonso delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning and the Athletics rallied past the Royals 5-4. The defending world champions dropped five games out of the wild-card race with only 18 games left.

Rays: LHP Drew Smyly pitched 52⁄ innings to remain unbeaten at Rogers Centre, SS Alexei Ramirez and OF Steven Souza Jr. hit home runs and the Rays beat the Blue Jays 6-2. The Blue Jays, who have lost eight of 11 September games, entered one game ahead of the Orioles for the first AL wild card.

Marlins: OF Ichiro Suzuki had three hits Monday night to pass Lou Brock for the 25th spot on the career list with 3,025 hits. Brock finished his career with 3,023. Suzuki is 28 hits behind 24th-place Rod Carew.

Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole was placed on the 60-day DL on Tuesday with a right elbow injury, ending his season. Cole returned to the mound Monday after missing three weeks and gave up five runs on four hits and four walks in two innings of a 6-2 loss to the Phillies. He finishes with a 7-10 record in 21 starts and a 3.88 ERA. A year ago he was fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting after going 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA.
