No. 8 Dons upset No. 1 Cardinals in soccer, 2-1

Ben Gallagher scored the game-winner with 29 seconds left as No. 8 host Loyola Blakefield upset top-ranked Calvert Hall, 2-1, in soccer Wednesday.

The Dons improved to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference, and the Cardinals fell to 4-1, 4-1.

Zach Urbanski scored on a header to give Calvert Hall a 1-0 lead at the 65th-minute mark. Loyola’s Marcei Desormeaux scored on a free kick from 20 yards 41⁄ minutes later to even the score. Alex Reid assisted on Gallagher’s goal.

Chris Karpovich made eight saves for Dons. Kyle Cooper made four saves for the Cardinals.

NO. 6 CATONSVILL­E 0, TOWSON 0, OT: The host Comets (2-1-1) took 25 shots to six for the Generals (4-0-1), but 16 saves by Towson senior goalie Austin Wenck denied them victory.

Catonsvill­e’s best opportunit­y in the first half came with 20 minutes left when Dale Boring rocketed a free kick from Drew Bateman to the far corner, from10 yards out, but Wenck rejected it with one hand.

“That save in the first half is as good a Maryvale’s Jenna DiPeso tries to get around Notre Dame Prep’s Camille McGarvey for better position on a throw-in. high school save as you will see,” Generals coach Jon Becker said. “That shifted the momentum, and he was locked in at that point.”

Said Catonsvill­e coach Chris Hastings said: “If Dale hits that a foot lower or foot higher it’s in the goal.”

SEVERN 3, ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN 0: Devin McCarthy, Spencer Wright and Henry Reed scored to lead the host Admirals (5-3, 2-1 MIAA B Conference) past the Eagles (1-3, 1-3).

Girls soccer

NO. 5 NOTRE DAME PREP 3, MARYVALE 0: Forwards Halle Regan, Alex Fava and Gillian Eby scored for the Blazers (3-1) in an Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n of Maryland nonconfere­nce game victory over the host Lions (0-5-1).

NO. 11 PERRY HALL 3, EASTERN TECH 2: The visiting Gators (4-1) scored twice late in the game to beat the Mavericks (1-2).

Rachel Bohli, Ryleigh Fachler and Erica Fitch scored for Perry Hall.

Girls volleyball

NO. 11 ST. PAUL’S D. ARCHBISHOP SPALDING, 3-2: Jala Tucker had 21 kills and Morgan Hill had 31 assists to lead the host Gators (2-0, 2-0 IAAM A Conference) past the Cavaliers (0-4, 0-1).

St. Paul’s won, 15-25, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12.

GLENELG COUNTRY D. FRIENDS, 3-2: Joy Hursey had nine kills and the host Dragons (1-0, 1-0 IAAM C Conference) had 21 aces and beat the Quakers (0-1, 0-1).

Glenelg Country won, 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 17-15.

NO. 7 MOUNT DE SALES D. JOHN CARROLL, 3-1: Camille Kreisel went 22for-22 serving with six aces and the host Sailors (1-1, 1-1 IAAM A Conference) beat the Patriots (3-1, 1-1).

Mount de Sales won, 26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19.

Water polo

GILMAN 10, LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD 9: Patrick Elfert had three goals for the Dons (8-2) in a loss to the host Greyhounds (3-5).

Loyola’s previous loss was to Malvern Prep (Pa.), 13-12, on Sept. 2.
