Now you can request a new Social Security card online

- — Sarah Gantz

The Social Security Administration has launched an online service that allows Marylanders to replace their Social Security card without going to one of its offices. The online feature is part of the agency’s consumer portal, socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Maryland is one of the first states where the service is available. The agency plans to roll out the service to other states later this year. The agency hopes that making more services available online will improve efficiency at its offices, by leading to shorter wait times and freeing up staff to focus on customers with more in-depth needs, according to a statment. Social Security beneficiaries also can use the online portal to change their address, adjust direct deposit settings and obtain benefit verification letters. The online portal can be used to request a new Medicare card too.
