Corvus might run in Maryland Million

-

Wayne Harrison, Bob Manfuso and Katie Voss’ 3-year-old gelding Corvus might have earned himself a return trip to the Oct. 22 Maryland Million after his front-running victory in Sunday’s featured ninth race at Laurel Park. The bay son of Dance With Ravens, who debuted last fall with a victory in the six-furlong Maryland Million Nursery on dirt, was making his second straight grass start in the $42,000 allowance for 3-year-olds and up. Under jockey Jevian Toledo, Corvus ($8.60) ran 11⁄ miles in 1:41.42 over a firm All Along Turf Course. “This was a little quick back but there really wasn’t any other option for him that wasn’t too close to Maryland Million,” said Voss, who also trains Corvus. “If he comes out of this good we’d like to try that if it doesn’t come up too tough. If he’s good, we’ll go.” MORELAURELPARK: Jockeys Sheldon Russell, Angel Cruz and Luis Garcia, each shaken up in separate incidents over the weekend, are expected to ride in Friday’s program. … Jockey Trevor McCarthy followed up his four-win day Saturday with another three victories, aboard Tracy Island ($6) in the first race, Full of Zip ($4.80) in the seventh and Sir Luca Richard ($4.60) in the 10th. … Total handle Saturday on Laurel Park’s Commonwealth Day was up 72.5 percent from last year. Commonwealth Day, featuring victories by Deeply Undervalued in the Commonwealth Derby (G2) and Blacktype in the Commonwealth Turf Cup (G2), generated a total handle of $4.2 million compared to $2.4 million in 2015. Saturday’s card had two more graded stakes than last year. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: McDaniel junior kicker Spencer Wiersberg was named Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. … Salisbury freshman defensive back Andre Boone was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Defen- sive Rookie of the Week. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: No. 11 Northwestern (8-2, 3-0 Big Ten Conference) scored with 11 minutes left to earn a 3-2 win over visiting No. 6 Maryland (7-3, 2-1). WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: No. 21 Northwestern (10-1, 3-1 Big Ten) scored three first-half goals to earn a 4-1 win over host Maryland (3-7-1, 1-1-1 Big Ten). … Two second-half goals lifted visiting Towson (4-7-1, 1-1 Colonial Athletic Conference) to a 2-1 victory over William & Mary. MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: Patrick Mullins (Maryland) scored two goals and D.C. United (8-9-13) earned a 4-1 win over visiting Orlando City (7-10-13) on Saturday night to move into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: The visiting Washington Spirit (12-5-3) got a goal early in the second half from Crystal Dunn but lost, 3-1, at the Chicago Red Stars (9-5-6) on Saturday night. Washington announced Sunday that it will host Chicago in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, the Portland Thorns (12-3-5) earned a 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC (7-8-5) on Sunday night to claim the regular-season title. —
