No. 1 Curley overwhelms St. Paul’s, 6-0, in soccer

Top-ranked Archbishop Curley shut out host St. Paul’s, 6-0, Wednesday and is one game away from becoming the top seed in the Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference soccer playoffs.

Ben Stitz and Matt Brummet each scored twice against the Crusaders (1-14-1, 1-13-1).

A win or a tie against host Gilman on Friday would secure the top seed for Curley (17-3-2, 12-2-1). No. 2 Mount Saint Joseph would take the second seed, followed by No. 3 Calvert Hall, No. 5 McDonogh, No. 6 Gilman and Loyola Blakefield. Playoffs begin Monday.

NO. 2 MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH 2, JOHN CARROLL 0: The host Gaels (13-2-2, 11-2-2 MIAA A Conference) scored a goal in each half to beat the Patriots (6-12-2, 4-10-1).

Ian Reger and Brett St. Martin scored for Mount Saint Joseph.

NO. 5 MCDONOGH 1, LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD 0, OT: Casey Settleman scored the game-winner during a scramble inside the box to lift the Eagles (13-6-0, 9-6-0 MIAAA Conference) over the host Dons (8-6-4, 6-6-3).

NO. 6 GILMAN 2, ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 1: Teddy Ndje and Avery Merlo scored to lead the Greyhounds (9-5-4, 7-5-3 MIAA A Conference) past the host Cavaliers (4-13-1, 3-11-1).

Girls volleyball

NO. 4 ST. PAUL’S D. MARYVALE, 3-1: Jala Tucker had 21 kills and Morgan Hill had 39 assists to lead the host Gators (13-1-1, 11-0 Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n of Maryland A Conference) past the Lions (10-5, 8-2), 25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20.

NO. 9 TOWSON D. NO. 8 HEREFORD, 3-0: The Generals (12-2) handed the host Bulls (14-1) their first loss of the season, 17-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-8, in the Baltimore County championsh­ip.

“It shows we go down against a really good team and fight back,” Towson coach Emily Berman said.
