Williams lifts Buckeyes over Mids

UMBC ties team record with 17 3s

Baltimore native Kam Williams enjoyed a successful homecoming by scoring 23 points as Ohio State (1-0) defeated host Navy, 78-68, in the second game of a doublehead­er in the third annual Veterans Classic on Friday night.

Williams, a Mount Saint Joseph graduate, made five of six 3-pointers in equaling his career high.

Keita Bates-Diop (14 points), Marc Loving (13) and Trevor Thompson (11) led a balanced Buckeyes offense that had five players in double figures.

Sophomore guard Hasan Abdullah, who missed most of last season with a hip injury, had a career-high 22 points to lead Navy. Senior forward James Hemphill threw down a dunk to cap a career-high 12-point outing off the bench.

Shawn Anderson (11 points) and Ryan Pearson (10) also reached double digits for the Midshipmen (0-1), who showed newfound depth by rotating 10 players.

UMBC 92, HOOD 61: Jairus Lyles scored 18 points and the host Retrievers tied a school record with 17 3-pointers to cruise over the Blazers (0-1) in coach Ryan Odom’s debut Friday night.

Will Darley (Dulaney) scored 14 points, and Ben Grace (Gilman) and Joe Sherburne added 12 apiece for UMBC (1-0).

DUQUESNE 65, LOYOLA MARYLAND 60: Andre Walker and Jarred Jones (John Carroll) each scored 21 points, but the Greyhounds (0-1) fell to the host Dukes (1-0). Duquesne’s Tarin Smith had a team-high 13 points. NO. 20 WEST VIRGINIA 87, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 59: Nathan Adrian scored 13 points to lead host West Virginia (1-0) to a victory over Mount St. Mary’s (0-1).

Greg Alexander led Mount St. Mary’s with 15 points.

GEORGE WASHINGTON 75, UMES 71: Tyler Cavanaugh scored a game-high 24 points to lead the host Colonials (1-0) over the Hawks (0-1).

Bakari Copeland scored 21 points, Ryan Andino had 11 and Thomas Rivera added 10 for UMES.

HOFSTRA 74, COPPIN STATE 72: Eli Pemberton scored 20 points off the bench, and the host Pride (1-0) outscored the Eagles 46-36 in the second half to win the season opener for both teams.

Joshua Treadwell scored a team-high 25 points for Coppin State (0-1).

HOUSTON 93, MORGAN STATE 52: Rob Gray Jr. scored 22 points and Devin Davis added 19 to lift the host Cougars (1-0) over the Bears (0-1).

Tiwian Kendley had 18 points and Phillip Carr added 16 for Morgan State.
