Stevenson to play at Wesley in D-III football tourney

The Stevenson football team will play its first NCAA Division III tournament game Saturday at noon when it travels to Dover, Del., to face Wesley (8-2). The Mustangs (9-1), in just their sixth season as a varsity program, earned the Middle Atlantic Conference’s automatic berth after they clinched their first MAC title with a 28-10 win at Lycoming on Saturday. Wesley is making its 12th straight NCAAtourna­ment appearance after winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s automatic berth. Johns Hopkins (10-0), winner of the Centennial Conference’s automatic bid, will host Randolph-Macon (9-1) in the first round Saturday at Homewood Field at noon. MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: McDaniel sophomore Anthony Crawley (City) was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. … Johns Hopkins senior quarterbac­k Jonathan Germano was picked CC Offensive Player of the Week. … Frostburg State sophomore quarterbac­k Connor Cox (South River) was selected Offensive Player of the Week and freshman linebacker Monte Jones (St. Mary’s) Defensive Rookie of the Week by the New Jersey Athletic Conference. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Salisbury was picked to finish second, St. Mary’s fourth and Frostburg State 10th in the Capital Athletic Conference preseason poll of coaches. Christophe­r Newport was the unanimous preseason favorite in the 10-team league. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Johns Hopkins was picked to finish sixth in the Centennial Conference preseason poll. Muhlenberg was selected to repeat as league champion in 2017, but the Blue Jays received a first-place vote. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Maryland served 13 aces as the Terps (11-17, 3-13 Big Ten) earned a sweep, 25-16, 27-25, 25-21, of visiting Rutgers (4-25, 0-16). Sophomore outside hitter Liz Twilley tied for the match lead with 12 kills. … Towson will be the fifth seed for the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n championsh­ip, which will be held Nov. 18-20 on the campus of North CarolinaWi­lmington. The Tigers (23-8) will face Hofstra (20-9) in the first round Friday at 4 p.m. SAILING: Annapolis Yacht Club is the fifth best private club in the United States, according to rankings compiled by Platinum Clubs of America for 2016-2018. More than 3,000 general managers, owners and presidents from private clubs around the United States voted in the biennial rankings. GOLF: The Timbers at Troy course in Elkridge will be renovated during the next three to six months, the Howard County Parks and Recreation Department and KemperSpor­ts announced.
